How do I use Azelaic Advanced?
Apply evenly across face and neck. Use in the evening, as your first step after cleansing. As with any acid, introduce slowly: start 2x per week and gradually work up to daily use.
Pro tip: When using acids, use sunscreen daily and take extra caution to protect yourself from sun exposure.
How soon will I see results?
Most people notice less redness within about two weeks of consistent use. Everyone's skin is a little different, so the exact timing varies, but with regular use the calming effect typically starts to show around then.
Is it less irritating than prescription tretinoin?
Generally, yes. Azelaic Advanced is solubilized, unlike traditional azelaic acid creams that contain crystals, which are often the source of irritation. It still penetrates deeply, so introduce it slowly.
For the first week, apply it after your moisturizer to buffer its strength. If your skin tolerates it well, move it to before your moisturizer for better absorption.
Can I use it with retinoids, acids, vitamin C or peptides?
Yes. Azelaic acid has no major ingredient incompatibilities, so it pairs well with retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, growth factors, vitamin C and peptides. Start slowly when combining it with other acids or retinoids.
Alternate it with your stronger actives at first, then build up to layering as your skin adjusts. Many of our customers use it alongside other actives, and some use it twice a day once their skin is tolerant.
I broke out after starting. Could this be purging?
Possibly. Azelaic acid is a PPAR agonist, which means it works on the skin more like a retinoid than a typical exfoliant, and that can bring underlying congestion to the surface.
Purging is temporary. It typically resolves once the skin clears out the deeper blockages. If you're not sure whether it's purging or irritation, get in touch and we'll help you work it out.
